Building Capacity for Irrigated Agriculture in Gode
Agricultural development depends on more than infrastructure alone. It also requires the knowledge, systems and practical capacity needed to turn resources and investment into sustainable results.
SuDCA’s documented work in Gode, Somali Region, included a capacity-building assignment for irrigated agriculture implemented with JICA and Sanyu Consultants.
The assignment ran from January 2014 to January 2015 and focused on strengthening capacity related to irrigated agricultural development in the Gode area.
From investment to practical capacity
For development programmes, technical interventions are most effective when the people and institutions responsible for implementation have the capacity to apply them in practice.
Capacity building therefore becomes an important part of creating sustainable development results.
SuDCA’s role in the Gode assignment formed part of this broader development approach, bringing consultancy and capacity-building experience into an agricultural context in one of Ethiopia’s important pastoral and agro-pastoral regions.
Working in context
Development assignments in the Somali Region require an understanding of local conditions, livelihoods and institutional realities.
This is particularly important when agricultural development intersects with pastoral and agro-pastoral communities.
SuDCA’s wider documented portfolio includes work involving rural development, natural resources, livelihoods, surveys, institutional strengthening and participatory approaches.
These areas of experience provide an important foundation for understanding development challenges beyond the boundaries of a single project.
A practical lesson
Capacity building is most valuable when it is connected to the realities of implementation.
The Gode assignment reflects an approach that links technical knowledge with institutional and human capacity — helping development programmes move from plans and investments toward practical application.
